Description

Requesting that leading pedestrian intervals be increased and added from the 600 block of W Franklin to the 900 block of E Franklin - spanning the entire distance of Franklin from Monroe Park to the Capital. The current LPI at the intersection of Belvidere and Franklin is far too short for an intersection this large and so frequently used by pedestrians. For the rest of Franklin, please add LPIs at all signalized crosswalks. For those that already have LPIs, please increase the time. Thank you!

Dear Citizen, Thank you for your feedback regarding Leading Pedestrian Intervals (LPIs). We appreciate community input on improving pedestrian safety. Decisions regarding signal timing, including LPIs, are guided by established traffic engineering standards, pedestrian volumes, intersection geometry, and overall safety considerations. At the intersection of Belvidere and Franklin, the current LPI timing has been set to balance pedestrian crossing needs with vehicle traffic efficiency and safety, based on the intersection width and signal cycle length. For the remainder of Franklin Street, all pedestrian signal timings, including potential LPIs, are evaluated during routine signal timing reviews or when warranted by observed pedestrian demand. At this time, no further action is needed; however, your request will be considered during future signal optimization and safety reviews. Thank you again for your engagement and for helping us improve pedestrian safety in the area.
