Description
The intersection of Kensington Ave & Nansemond St. is very dangerous and very much in need of a four way stop sign. Traffic both eastbound and westbound travels at speeds greater than the posted limit of 25MPH. Attempting to cross Nansemond is extremely difficult & dangerous especially if heading north on Nansemond. I have two friends who have been hit by oncoming traffic whilst trying to cross this intersection. Parked cars close to the intersection make visibility poor adding to the danger.

- Staff · July 11, 2025DPW must perform engineering studies in accordance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) before installing an all-way stop. All all-way stops must meet the warrants in the MUTCD. The intersection of Kensington Ave and Nansemond St does not meet the traffic requirements for an all-way stop. The average speed on Kensington measured 29mph in the 25mph zone. Traffic calming is not planned. The latest eight full years of DMV crash data (1.1.17– 12.31.24) did not reveal any reported pedestrian crashes at the intersection of Kensington and Nansemond. Google Street view shows crosswalks on each leg and stop signs and stop bars on Nansemond. Field staff have visited the site and made sure the stop signs are in good condition and visible to the motoring public. They will expand the No Parking zones on Kensington to enhance intersection sight distance.
