Description

There is scaffolding, construction equipment, trash cans, and construction signage blocking both sides of the sidewalk on the stretch of road between Bank Street and Main Street. This is a very high traffic area by the state capitol, with heavy pedestrian traffic and vehicle traffic. For weeks, pedestrians have had to walk in the road. With construction on one side now taking over one of the traffic lanes, vehicles and pedestrians are required to share one lane of traffic.

I’ve followed up with our Right of Way Inspector, who spoke directly with the project’s permit holder. The contractor is currently in the process of installing scaffolding, and once completed, pedestrian access will be maintained beneath it for safe passage. In the meantime, signage is being adjusted so that pedestrians are directed to cross at nearby intersections before reaching the closure zone. Additionally, nearby state and private building managers are being notified to keep their staff and visitors informed about the temporary conditions and the expected restoration of access once scaffolding is in place. We’ll continue to monitor the area to ensure pedestrian safety is prioritized. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you notice anything further or have additional concerns.
