Description
I live in the Carytown Crossing Apartments and have witnessed near-accidents and hear honking at an alarming rate at this intersection. Most intersections in the Museum District are 4-way stops. People assume this when they come to a stop at the Nansemond cross section and expect the people traveling 25-30 mph on Kensington to stop (which they do not, because there is no stop sign). There either needs to be a sign on Nansemond under the Stop sign alerting people of this, or a stop on Kensington.

- Staff · July 11, 2025DPW must perform engineering studies in accordance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) before installing an all-way stop. All all-way stops must meet the warrants in the MUTCD. The intersection of Kensington Ave and Nansemond St does not meet the traffic requirements for an all-way stop. The average speed on Kensington measured 29mph in the 25mph zone. Traffic calming is not planned. Google Street view shows crosswalks on each leg and stop signs and stop bars on Nansemond. Field staff have visited the site and made sure the stop signs are in good condition and visible to the motoring public. They will expand the No Parking zones on Kensington to enhance intersection sight distance.
