Description

Drivers use the 1700 block of Wilmington Ave. (mostly the eastbound side of the central median) as a cut-through to avoid back-ups at the Laburnum Ave. & Hermitage intersection. Many of these individuals speed down Wilmington with reckless disregard for the numerous children and other neighbors that may walk in close proximity, attempt to cross the street, or pull out of their parking spaces. The increased heavy, speeding traffic at rush hours makes a normally quiet block very unsafe!

Wilmington Ave traffic stops at each intersection between Rosedale Ave and Hermitage Rd. (This means traffic also stops at Lanvale Ave.) The average speeds between the stop signs measured less than 24mph in a residential zone of 25mph. The annual average hourly traffic on Wilmington Ave is around 40 vehicles an hour. The general practice for DPW is to manage traffic in place along public streets in lieu of placing restrictions such as No Left Turn signs or restricting thru traffic. Therefore, speed tables and vehicle restrictions are not currently planned. The traffic and speed data were measured in March 2025. DPW will monitor the improvements at Hermitage Rd and Laburnum Ave intersection and adjust as needed.
