Description

While I greatly appreciate a 24 hour school zone speed limit, the fact of the matter is most drivers do not remeber their drivers ed, and are far to used to the ‘when flashing’ system. Signs informing drivers that the speed limit is 25 within the school zone are needed, along with signs at the exit of the school zone.

A DPW representative met with Veritas School officials on 11.19.19 and on 5.10.22 about installing school zone flashers on Brook Road. DPW encouraged Veritas to pursue the design and installation of school zone flashers on Brook Road to reduce the speed limit from 35MPH to 25MPH during arrival and dismissal times. A work in street permit is required and the flashers must be built in accordance with VDOT standards and specifications. DPW staff offered to assist Veritas in obtaining a design consultant and construction firm to do this work. DPW would also assist with locating the flasher locations, inspecting the completed work and perform all future maintenance. DPW also suggested Veritas establish a school crossing guard program to better protect students crossing uncontrolled intersections near the Veritas.
