Description

There are multiple issues with this intersection. Some going N-S on Nansemond think it's a 4 way stop so they pull out in front of Kensington traffic (thinking Kensington has a stop). The reverse is also true; some people going E-W on Kensington think they have to stop when there is no stop sign, causing confusion of who has right of way and backing up traffic. The situation is amplified by pedestrians and students who use this intersection. Someone was hit in the crosswalk about a month ago.

The latest nine full years of DMV crash data (1.1.16– 12.31.24) did not reveal any reported pedestrian crashes at the intersection of Kensington Ave and Nansemond St. Google Street view shows stop signs and stop bars on Nansemond St. Field staff have been dispatched to check the presence and condition of the stop signs and make sure they are visible to the motoring public. DPW must perform engineering studies in accordance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) before installing an all-way stop. All all-way stops must meet the warrants in the MUTCD. The intersection of Kensington Ave and Nansemond St does not meet the traffic requirements for an all-way stop.
