Description

Many students cross Midlothian Turnpike near George Wythe High School daily without a safe crossing. This is a four-lane highway, and many students live in the low-income housing nearby. While speed cameras help, a protected pedestrian crossing (such as a crosswalk with a signal or pedestrian bridge) is urgently needed to prevent accidents. Please address this safety concern.

Pedestrian crossing signs and a crosswalk exists on Midlothian Turnpike at Wythemar St. A pedestrian hybrid beacon (PHB) is planned for Midlothian Turnpike between Belt Blvd and Wythemar St. A PHB is a traffic control device designed to help pedestrians safely cross roadways at midblock crossings and uncontrolled intersections. The beacon head consists of two red lenses above a single yellow lens. The lenses remain ”dark“ until a pedestrian desiring to cross the street pushes the call button to activate the beacon, which then initiates a yellow to red lighting sequence consisting of flashing and steady lights that directs motorists to slow and come to a stop and provides the right-of-way to the pedestrian to safely cross the roadway before going dark again.
