Description
Drivers speed down the steep hill on Duryea Drive (between Epsilon & Margate), and pedestrians/bikers on Duryea are constantly in danger of being hit. There are NO sidewalks& NO curbs. Cars coming down the hill make fast left turns onto Margate and are dangerous to oncoming Duryea traffic and people on Margate alike. Walking in this area is extremely treacherous. If sidewalks and crosswalks are not possible, please at least a 3-way stop at the junction of Duryea and Margate. Thank you!

- Staff · January 3, 2025The 85th percentile speed, the speed that 85 percent of drivers travel at or below, is one of the best indicators of a reasonable and safe speed. The 85th percentile speed sample on Duryea Dr near Margate Dr measured 26mph. The speed sample is in general compliance with the 25-mph speed for residential streets and speed tables are not planned. DPW must perform an engineering study in accordance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) before installing an all-way stop. All all-way stops must meet the warrants in the MUTCD. The intersection of Duryea Dr and Margate Dr does not meet the MUTCD traffic volume requirements for an all-way stop. Gaps in traffic for pedestrians to safely cross is a key issue for pedestrians crossing the street. Marked crosswalks alone are insufficient since pedestrian crash risk may be increased by only providing a marked crosswalk. There are sufficient gaps in traffic on Duryea Dr at Margate Dr allowing pedestrians to cross the street. Also, the latest eight full years of DMV crash data (1.1.16 – 12.31.23) showed no reported pedestrian crashes. Crosswalks are not currently planned. Forwarded a request for sidewalks on Duryea Dr to the Department of Public Works’ Capital Improvement Plan Coordinator for consideration in the next Capital Improvement Plan.
