Description

There is an accident at this intersection almost every weekend. People go too fast on Ellwood. People turning from Auburn onto Ellwood cannot see the traffic because of parked cars on Ellwood. Auburn is also two way traffic unlike many side streets off of Ellwood, so that adds to the volume of traffic and confusion. Not sure if a light, a speed hump, more parking restrictions, or making Auburn one way is the right path, but it is a dangerous intersection for drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Ellwood Ave is posted with 25mph signs and enhanced speed $200 fine signs via a City Council resolution. Speed tables on Ellwood are not supported by the Fire Marshall given this street is functionally classified as an Urban Minor Arterial and a strategic route for emergency vehicles. There are no plans to convert Auburn Ave to one-way in the City’s Strategic Multimodal Transportation Plan. The Department of Public Works (DPW) must perform engineering studies in accordance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) before installing a traffic signal. The intersection of Ellwood and Auburn does not currently meet the MUTCD requirements for a traffic signal. Crosswalks are marked on each leg of Ellwood and Auburn. Stop signs and stop bars are on each leg of Auburn. The intersection has curb extensions and No Parking signs on both the north and south curb of Ellwood to enhance sight distance. DMV crash records for the latest five full years of records (1.1.19-12.31.23) show several “angle” type crashes so DPW will plan to install Intersection Ahead warning signs.
