Description

The current bike lane markings leading up to the south side of the Nickel Bridge put cyclists riding in the car lane over the bridge instead of the separated pedestrian sidewalk. I’ve seen cars get frustrated and pass these cyclists in dangerous ways for both the cyclist and oncoming traffic. A cyclist crossing from the northbound bike lane connecting them to the sidewalk prior to the bridge could be beneficial.

The new bike lane project was designed according to current best practices given the constraints near and on the bridge. The design team had multiple walk-throughs, before, during, and after construction to evaluate options. At this time, the current markings will remain. The Department will continue to monitor travel behavior of people driving, riding bikes, and walking/rolling.
