Description
“Railings Save Lives”. Two 10 feet drops within 48 inches of the edge of Longview Drive exist. ASAP: install signs, special guard rails, rumble strips and pavement markings to alert motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists, RVA 1st responders and participants in the annual RVA Marathon to vertical drops in proximity to the two, RVA DPU culvert pipe “head walls”. Many RVA 311 CSRS work orders and photos document this roadway hazard here in the RVA 4th District, Stratford Hills Neighborhood.

- Staff · October 4, 2024------Signs (warning, delineation and no parking) and pavement markings on Longview Dr near the culvert at Cooper Rd o An eight-year review of DMV crash records (1.1.16 – 12.31.23) did not reveal any reported crashes between Cooper Rd and Scottview Dr. o DPW has no plans to install signs or pavement markings given the crash history, annual average daily traffic and street typical section. o DPW will field review and add or replace delineators as needed near the culvert. ------Guardrail for the culvert area o DPU is responsible for guardrail at culverts. The DPU Operations Manager reviewed this matter and is not planning to install guardrail. DPW supports DPU’s position including the City Bridge Engineer who reviewed design standards from the Federal Highway Administration.
