Description
Intersection of Kensington Avenue and Robinson Street NEEDS 2 stop signs installed, one on the northbound side of Robinson and one on the southbound side. This intersection is a danger to both pedestrians and drivers as it contains 4 blind corners. There have been numerous accidents and even a death as a result of the blatant disregard for lack luster signage posted. With there being no stop signs on Robinson street, it allows cars to speed through a heavily trafficked area putting all at risk.

- Staff · October 23, 2024The Department of Public Works must perform an engineering study in accordance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) before installing an all-way stop. All all-way stops must meet the warrants in the MUTCD. The evaluation showed an all-way stop is not warranted at this intersection. Federal law prohibits using stop signs as a speed management device. A speed study showed the average speed on Robinson Street near this intersection is 20 MPH. 95% of its drivers are traveling at 27 MPH or below. On Kensington Avenue, 95% of people are driving 21 MPH or below. One pedestrian fatality occurred in 2022 when a driver headed westbound Kensington turned left onto Robinson (southbound). The driver reported sun glare as the reason for not seeing the pedestrian and the police did not file charges. The Department prepared options for removing the westbound movement for neighborhood consideration in Feb 2024. To date, the neighborhood does not support removing the westbound movement. No further action is planned at this intersection at this time.
