Description

Very fast North-South traffic that uses 31st as a cutthrough. Speed and volume makes it dangerous for pedestrians, and will only become moreso as residents start moving into the apartments on this block that are nearing completion. 31st between Midlothian and Semmes seem like a perfect candidate for a few speed tables, if nothing else.

The 85th percentile speed, the speed that 85 percent of drivers travel at or below, is one of the best indicators of a reasonable and safe speed. The 85th percentile speed sample on 31st St between Semmes Ave and Forest Hill Ave measured 22mph. Between Midlothian Turnpike and Forest Hill Ave the 85th percentile speed sample measured 20mph. The last eight full years of reported crashes from DMV (1.1.16 – 12.31.23) did not show any reported pedestrian crashes on the above sections of 31st St. The samples are in general compliance with the 25-mph speed for residential streets and speed tables are not planned.
