Description
The intersection of Kensington and Davis creates significant hazards for both drivers and pedestrians. The curve in Kensington creates a challenging situation for drivers approaching the road on Davis Avenue. Without a stop sign on Kensington Avenue at the Davis intersection, drivers are also speeding at tremendous rates down the road (often while driving distracted). Something needs to be done at this intersection, whether it be speed bumps or a four way stop sign.

- Staff · June 14, 2024The focused approach on speed management in the City’s Neighborhood Traffic Management Program first considers the distance of a free flow street of at least 1200’ in length in a tangent section without traffic signals, existing traffic calming measures or stopped conditions on the major street. Kensington Ave stops at Arthur Ashe Boulevard, Robinson St, Davis Ave, and Stafford Ave. The Kensington section without stopping measures approximately 700’ at the maximum. Traffic calming measures such as a speed table is not planned on this section of Kensington. The Department of Public Works must perform engineering studies in accordance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) before installing an all-way stop. The intersection of Kensington Ave and Davis Ave does not meet the traffic requirements for an all-way stop. The MUTCD also states in Section 2B.06 “Yield or stop signs shall not be used for speed control.”
