Description

Turning left from the west side of Carnation St from Reserve South Apartments heading towards Hioaks Rd has a major blind spot from cars speeding down the curve on Carnation St. There are also a lot of pedestrians who need to cross the road to get from one side of the apartment complex to the other, and there is no safe way for them to do so. I think a speed control measure and crosswalks can help prevent an accident waiting to happen.

Carnation St eastbound (heading towards Midlothian Turnpike) has an intersection ahead sign with an advisory speed of 25mph upstream of the entrance to Reserve South Apartments. Carnation St between Midlothian Turnpike and Hioaks Rd has 35mph speed limit signs and appropriate warning signs with advisory speed limit signs in each direction. There are no planned changes to regulatory or warning signs including the speed limit in this section. The request for a crosswalk will be reviewed by another engineer.

Carnation Street is on the City's High Injury Network and a priority for speed management. The intersection sight distance is too difficult for people to safely cross at current speeds. A crosswalk will not be implemented at this time, but the Department will be performing a citywide pedestrian planning effort in the next year.
