Description

VCU employees need better signage when walking up from Shockoe/Church Hill to work. It is so unsafe to have cars slowing down, speeding up, merging and pedestrians trying to cross. Imagine a person in a a walker or wheelchair using this space. Both VCU and the city should prioritize solutions for this intersection and the one where 95 comes back onto Broad.

Broad St around I-95 has been field reviewed. Pavement marking and sign work orders are in progress to replace and install pedestrian related signs and to freshen the crosswalk pavement markings. Broad St around 16th St has a pedestrian hybrid beacon designed to help pedestrians safely cross higher volume street. The beacon head consists of two red lenses above a single yellow lens. The lenses remain “dark“ until a pedestrian desiring to cross the street pushes the call button to activate the beacon, which then initiates a yellow to red lighting sequence consisting of flashing and steady lights that directs motorists to slow and come to a stop and provides the right-of-way to the pedestrian to safely cross the roadway before going dark again. The nearby traffic signals on Broad at 14th St, at 17th St and at 18th St provide safe pedestrian crossings by using pedestrian signals.
