Description
Have noticed an increase of people speeding down West Ave. Especially on the 1100 block. There are a lot of young kids on the street and the dangerous speeds are concerning. Interested in exploring speed reduction methods such as - speed tables - post speed limit signs - reduction of speed limit to 15 mph - stop signs on intersections of west and boyd and west and birch

- Staff · April 12, 2024The 85th percentile speed, the speed that 85 percent of drivers travel at or below, is one of the best indicators of a reasonable and safe speed. The 85th percentile speed on West Ave for a 48-hour period was 22 mph. This sample is in compliance with the 25-mph speed for residential streets. We do not have plans to install 25mph signs, reduce the speed to 15mph or to install speed tables. Adding stop signs on West Ave at Boyd St and at Birch St becomes all-way stops for these intersections. DPW must perform engineering studies in accordance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) before installing an all-way stop. All all-way stops must meet the warrants in the MUTCD. These two intersections don’t meet the traffic requirements for an all-way stop. Furthermore, the MUTCD states in Section 2B.06 “Yield or stop signs shall not be used for speed control.”
