Description
8 cases requested traffic calming measures have been issued for w 29th st in one year. The latest cases point that the distance from the stop sign to Semmes is slightly too short for a speed table. This leaves only one measure to slow traffic down; a stop sign and enforcement is the only solution. Please install a stop at McDonough St intersection, and add stripping.

- Staff · April 2, 2024The Department of Public Works must perform engineering studies in accordance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) before installing an all-way stop. All all-way stops must meet the warrants in the MUTCD. The intersection of 29th St and McDonough St does not meet the traffic requirements for an all-way stop. Furthermore, the MUTCD states in Section 2B.06 “Yield or stop signs shall not be used for speed control.” The traffic volumes on the free flow street (29th St) and the stopped street (McDonough St) must be at a certain level for each hour for eight hours of a weekday to meet the requirements of the MUTCD all-way stop warrants. For example, 29th St must have 300 or more vehicles an hour for an eight-hour period. At the same time McDonough must have 200 or more vehicles an hour for an eight-hour period. Both traffic conditions must be met.
