Description

With the park, SPCA, a School, Bus stop, and apartments all nearby, this intersection sees a lot of traffic that varies wildly hour to hour. Traffic down hermitage is often well above the 35 mph limit, which is itself too fast for bikes to feel comfortable on the sharrow. Crosswalks should be well marked here crossing both streets, given a school and entertainment facility so close by. And proper signage should be used to notify drivers of their duty to yield/stop for pedestrians. + more

Gaps in traffic for pedestrians to safely cross is a key issue especially on multi-lane streets. Marked crosswalks alone are insufficient, since pedestrian crash risk may be increased by only providing a marked crosswalk. We must consider using other treatments, such as traffic signals with pedestrian signals where warranted to improve crossing safety for pedestrians. A traffic signal is a capital expense and not planned. Therefore, the city has no current plans to mark a crosswalk on Hermitage Rd and Rhoadmiller St. DPW will field review and add more 35mph signs on Hermitage Rd between Robin Hood Rd and Ownby Lane as needed.
