- Staff · March 12, 2024The Fire Marshall does not support traffic calming measures on Broad St in the area between 16th St and 20th St. This street is classified as an Urban Arterial, averages around 20,000 vehicles a day and is a strategic route for emergency vehicles. Broad St in the area of 16th St has a pedestrian hybrid beacon designed to help pedestrians safely cross higher volume street. The beacon head consists of two red lenses above a single yellow lens. The lenses remain ”dark“ until a pedestrian desiring to cross the street pushes the call button to activate the beacon, which then initiates a yellow to red lighting sequence consisting of flashing and steady lights that directs motorists to slow and come to a stop and provides the right-of-way to the pedestrian to safely cross the roadway before going dark again. Also, the nearby traffic signals on Broad at 14th St, at 17th St and at 18th St have pedestrian signal heads.
