Description

There are numerous accidents at this intersection, Wellington and Bancroft, and regular incidents of speeding well over 45 mph (the speed limit is 24 mph). Adding speed bumps AND a 4-way stop sign would vastly improve the safety of the street. Currently there is only a 2-way stop sign.

The 85th percentile speed, the speed that 85 percent of drivers travel at or below, is one of the best indicators of a reasonable and safe speed. The 85th percentile speed on Bancroft Ave for a 48hour period averaged 23mph. This sample complies with the posted 25 mph speed. Speed tables are not planned. The Department of Public Works (DPW) must perform an engineering study in accordance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) before installing an all-way stop. All all-way stops must meet the warrants in the MUTCD. The intersection of Bancroft Ave and Wellington St does not currently meet the traffic volume requirements for an all-way stop.
