Description
Using the Lombardy Street crosswalk located at 413 Stuart Circle between West Ave and Stuart Circle is dangerous. Frequently, when pedestrians attempt to use this crosswalk, vehicles don’t stop or even slow down. Often vehicles speed up to make a green light at the next intersection. Safety measures are needed to increase awareness of the crosswalk and influence drivers to yield to pedestrians. Ideas: a raised crosswalk, speed bump, flashing lights, additional signage. and roadway lighting.

- Staff · February 16, 2024As part of the City’s Vision Zero Initiative and Bicycle Master Plan, the Department of Public Works is designing and implementing a well-connected network of bicycle infrastructure that improves overall multimodal mobility and safety. In Fall 2023, DPW began the process of extending the Franklin Street bike lanes from the existing endpoint at Belvidere Street west to Lombardy Street at Stuart Circle. The first step was public engagement to get feedback on five potential design alternatives. The Lombardy Street intersection is an important part of the project. DPW performs safety assessments on projects like this. Fortunately, the crash history for the portions of Monument/Lombardy/Franklin around Stuart Circle is low enough that those segments are not on the high injury network. Still, we’re evaluating several ways to shorten the crossing distances for people walking, rolling, and cycling as part of the Franklin Street bike lane project. We are still in the design process, and anticipate the next public engagement period in Spring 2024. The community will have an opportunity to comment and provide additional feedback to further refine the design plans for the entire corridor, including the Lombardy Street intersection. After that, we will pursue funding to implement the final design plans.
