Description

The intersection of Cherokee Road and Chellowe Road needs 2 stop signs (on Cherokee) or a crosswalk (on Cherokee) to make that intersection a 4 way stop. Cars are going too fast and there is a church (Community Baptist) and pool (Southampton) that creates a lot of traffic and foot traffic in that area. Having a 4 way stop at Cherokee/Chellowe with a crosswalk would make things safer and would slow down traffic in an area that has a lot of foot traffic and kids.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) must perform an engineering study in accordance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) before installing an all-way stop. All all-way stopsmust meet the warrants in the MUTCD. The MUTCD conditions are mainly about a combination of traffic on the free flow street and the stopped street. This is basically how the MUTCD warrant works: - The traffic volumes along the free flow street (major street) and the stopped street (minor street) must be at a certain level for each hour for eight hours of a week day to meet the requirements of the MUTCD all-way stop warrants. o Major street minimum requirement (total of both approaches) =300 or more vehicles an hour. o Minor street minimum requirement (total of both approaches) = 200 or more vehicles an hour. - Both of these traffic conditions must be met. This intersection of Cherokee Rd and Chellowe Rd does not have the volume conditions for an all-way stop.
