Description

In the interest of public safety we urgently need pedestrian crosswalks at these two intersections in order for local foot traffic given increased vehicular traffic due to bike lanes on Brookland Parkway (traffic has been pushed to surrounding streets). With a senior home and a school on Westwood, as well as residents walking/jogging, we need a way to slow traffic and safely cross these streets!

See Jake's comments below. Several years ago two speed tables were installed farther east due to higher speeds (~30 avg, ~36 85th) • The assertion that the bike lanes have diverted traffic from Brookland Parkway don’t appear to be reflected in the data and the bike lanes have been on Brookland Parkway for almost 8 years. Additionally, the significant departure between the two street alignments don’t readily serve the same origins/destinations, so it is unlikely that much of the BP traffic has diverted to Westwood. • If there has been an increase in traffic it is likely a result of redevelopment along Westwood over the last decade. The Canopy apartment complex at the intersection with Brook, Veritas School has seen increased enrollment over the years and has generated additional traffic, and the old hospital being retrofitted into residences have all likely resulted in what looks to bea modest increase in traffic. Westwood is an uninterrupted east/west street that extends 2/3 mile between signals and with no stop controls, so naturally it is inviting as a through-route. Crosswalks could possibly provide a small degree of visualdisruption to that street to break it up and communicate that it is a neighborhood street.
