Description

Request for a stop sign on Fauquier Avenue at its intersection with Nottoway Avenue. It’s the only intersection of Fauquier Avenue, south of Bellevue, that does not have a stop sign. We were told from the Civic Association that they reached out to the City but nothing has happened. The intersection is dangerous when crossing Fauquier Ave from Nottoway as the sight lines are not great. Further, there are a lot of children on the 3900 block of Fauquier.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) must perform an engineering study in accordance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices before installing an all-way stop. All all-way stops must meet the warrants in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). This is a federal publication that applies to all streets open to pubic travel. The MUTCD conditions are mainly about a combination of traffic on the free flow street and thestopped street. This is basically how the MUTCD warrant works: - The traffic volumes along the free flow street (major street) and the stopped street (minor street) must be at a certain level for each hour for eight hours of a week day to meet therequirements of the MUTCD all-way stop warrants. o Major street minimum requirement (total of both approaches) = 300 or more vehicles an hour. o Minor street minimum requirement (total of both approaches) = 200 or more vehicles an hour. - Both of these traffic conditions must be met. The intersection of Fauquier and Nottoway does not meet these volume conditions for an all-way stop
