- Staff · November 18, 2020M See response from Arborist S. Lilly. Closing ticket: The City does not remove trees due to proximity of water lines, and we do not perform preventative root pruning. Roots may infiltrate existing cracks in a pipe, but will not cause damage on their own. I’m assuming that any roots effecting the water line were pruned away from the pipe during the course of the trenching and repair. At this time it sounds as if the issue has been addressed and that there is no further “tree maintenance” required. Sam Lilly City Arborist MA-5551A
