Description

Request an all-way stop sign at Kensington & Sheppard. This is an unsafe intersection for pedestrians due to speeding cars on Kensington. The marked crosswalk is not observed by drivers, and presents a false sense of safety for pedestrians trying to cross.

All-way stop installations must meet the criteria in the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). This is a federal manual used by all fifty states to evaluate traffic control devices for streets open to public travel. I have reviewed the intersection of Kensington and Sheppard and it does not meet the conditions set forth in the MUTCD for an all-way stop. DPW is planning to install high visibility crosswalks at Kensington and Sheppardthis summer. Also DPW’s FY21 paving program is planned to be expanded pending the approval of the Mayor’s CIP budget and the effective implementation of the Central Virginia Transportation Authority. If these are approved then a combination speed table/crosswalk is planned on Kensington between Colonial and Sheppard.
