Research on the use of “Children Playing” signs shows they fail to achieve desired safety benefits, and national standards do not support their use because they suggest it is okay for children to play on or near the street. “Children Playing” signs cause a false sense of security in children and parents who believe the signs provide added protection in residential neighborhoods. The “Children Playing” sign may also suggest to drivers that ifno such sign is on another street, children are not playing there and it is okay to speed or be less vigilant. Therefore, we do not recommend installation of these signs.
