Description
Requesting traffic safety improvements at Ellwood Ave & Auburn Ave. Cars regularly speed down this stretch since there are no stop signs, speed bumps, or crosswalk lights making it dangerous for pedestrians and drivers rarely yield. The area has high foot traffic and poor visibility at night. Late-night racing and engine revving also disrupt residents. Please evaluate adding traffic calming measures, like a stop sign, speed bump, marked crosswalk with lights, or stop light.

- Staff · December 15, 2025The Department of Public Works must perform an engineering study in accordance with the Federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) before proposing an all-way stop or a traffic signal. The MUTCD is a federal publication that applies to all streets open to public travel. Warrants in the MUTCD must be met. The intersection of Ellwood Ave and Auburn Ave does not meet the traffic volume requirements set forth in the MUTCD for an all-way stop or a traffic signal. Two speed tables are planned on Ellwood Ave between Arthur Ashe Blvd and Thompson St. DMV crash records for the latest eight full years (1.1.17-12.31.24) did not show any reported pedestrian crashes on Ellwood Ave at N. Auburn Ave. A ‘crosswalk with lights’ is a capital improvement and is not in the FY2026 Adopted Annual Fiscal Plan. Crosswalks are marked on each intersection leg. Curb extensions are present on Ellwood Ave at N. Auburn Ave and serve multiple purposes, such as traffic calming, improving visibility and reducing crossing distances.
